- “Eat it from one Dhu al-Hijjah to the next”—that is, the meat of the sacrificial animals.
It was narrated by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh (4/2/370–371), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār (2/308), Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (7/569/5903), Aḥmad (6/155), and al-Khaṭīb in al-Muwaḍḍiḥ (1/202), through Yazīd ibn Abī Yazīd al-Anṣārī, from his wife, who asked ʿĀʾishah about the meat of the sacrificial animals. ʿĀʾishah said:
“ʿAlī returned to us from a journey, and we served some of it to him. He said, ‘I shall not eat it until I ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it.’” She said: So ʿAlī asked him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said ... and then she related the hadith.
I say: This chain of transmission is acceptable as corroborating evidence, because al-Bukhārī mentioned this Yazīd in connection with this hadith without making any critical or favourable assessment of him. Ibn Abī Ḥātim did likewise (4/2/298). As for Ibn Ḥibbān, he included him among the trustworthy narrators in al-Thiqāt (7/631), through the narration of al-Ḥārith ibn Yaʿqūb al-Anṣārī from him; and he is trustworthy. Two other trustworthy narrators also narrated from him, as may be gathered from al-Tārīkh and al-Muwaḍḍiḥ: Bukayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ashajj and Bakr ibn Sawādah; as did a fourth, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣāliḥ, whom Ibn Ḥibbān included among the trustworthy narrators (7/112). Al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned them in his biography in al-Taʿjīl (p. 454). Thus, he is truthful, Allah willing.
As for his wife, I have not identified her. In Ibn Ḥibbān’s version, she is referred to by the kunyah Umm Sulaym. Al-Ḥāfiẓ included her among the women known by their kunyahs in al-Taʿjīl, but added nothing beyond his statement concerning her:
“She has already been mentioned in the biography of her husband, Yazīd.”
