—used to say: “Its chain of transmission is good.”
(Note): Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykh in this hadith, is al-Dībājī al-Tustarī. I have not yet found a biographical notice for him, but it appears to me that he was one of al-Ṭabarānī’s well-known shaykhs, for he transmitted from him roughly twenty hadiths in his al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (2/148/2–150/1). This hadith has a continuation, which may be found in the cited place in al-Targhīb.
Moreover, the latter part of the hadith has two corroborating reports, from Anas and Abū Hurayrah, both containing objectionable elements, through two weak chains. I have cited them in the other book under no. 6107. *
3104—“Whenever he retired to his bed at night, he would bring his palms together, then blow lightly into them and recite over them: ‘Say: He is Allah, the One’; ‘Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak’; and ‘Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.’ He would then wipe with them as much of his body as he could reach, beginning with his head and face and the front of his body. He would do this three times.”
It was reported by al-Bukhārī (5017), Abū Dāwūd (5056), al-Tirmidhī in al-Sunan (3399) and al-Shamāʾil—in the chapter concerning his sleep, peace and blessings be upon him, no. 218, in abridged form—al-Nasāʾī in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah (788), and, through his route, Ibn al-Sunnī in his ʿAmal (691), Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (5519—al-Iḥsān), and Aḥmad (6/16), through the route of al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Faḍālah, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would ...—the hadith.
This ʿUqayl is ʿUqayl ibn Khālid ibn ʿUqayl al-Aylī, trustworthy and precise, as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated.
Al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Faḍālah was al-Qatabānī, the Egyptian judge. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said:
“Trustworthy, virtuous, and devout; Ibn Saʿd erred in declaring him weak.”
