The hadith also has a supporting mursal report, recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (12/504/15420): Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us: Ghalib ibn Sulayman Abu Salih narrated to us: al-Zubayr ibn Ṣurākh narrated to us: Musʿab ibn al-Zubayr said to us—while we were confronting al-Mukhtar—“Let your battle cry be: ‘Ha Mim; they shall not be aided,’ for this was the battle cry of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”
This is a chain of transmission whose narrators are trustworthy. Musʿab ibn al-Zubayr was the brother of ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, and Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy narrators in al-Thiqat (5/410). All its other narrators are among those included in al-Tahdhib, except al-Zubayr ibn Ṣurākh, whom I have been unable to identify. *
Equal treatment of sons and daughters, even in kissing!
3098—“Then why did you not treat them equally?!” That is, the son and the daughter.
Recorded by al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Maʿani (2/246), and by Ibn ʿAsakir in al-Tarikh (4/601—the Madinah copy), through two routes from Yaʿqub ibn Humayd ibn Kasib, who said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Muʿadh narrated to us from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Anas, who said:
A man was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). His son came, so he kissed him and seated him on his lap. Then his daughter came, and he seated her beside him. He said ... and then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Maʿmar and al-Zuhri are trustworthy narrators whose reliability is beyond question. ʿAbd Allah ibn Muʿadh and Yaʿqub ibn Humayd are both truthful, as stated in al-Taqrib, except that he said of the latter: “He would sometimes err.” This does not impair his hadith or lower it beneath the rank of good, as is well known to the scholars of this noble discipline.
