Yunus related it with a connected chain from Ibn Shihab: Yazid ibn Wadi'ah al-Ansari told me that Abu Hurayrah said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say …,” and then cited it.
It was recorded by Ibn Hibban (2290, Mawarid, and 6264, al-Ihsan).
I say: Yazid ibn Wadi'ah is known only through al-Zuhri’s narration from him. Ibn Hibban likewise included him in al-Thiqat (5/537), while Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him but left his notice blank.
Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/160) said: Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Asim ibn Umar, who said:
Whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned the Ansar, he would say:
“Self-restrained and patient.”
However, Ibn Idris was contradicted regarding its chain of transmission. Yahya ibn Zakariyya ibn Abi Za'idah said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Ibn Shafi'—who was a physician—who said:
Usayd ibn Hudayr summoned me, and I treated him by cutting his sciatic vein. He then related two hadiths to me, saying:
Members of two households from my people came to me: one household from Banu Zafar and another from Banu Mu'awiyah. They said, “Speak to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he may allot something to us or give us something,” or words to that effect. So I spoke to him, and he said:
“Yes. I shall allot half to each of their households; and if Allah grants us further provision, we shall give them more.”
He said: I replied, “May Allah reward you well, O Messenger of Allah!” He said:
“And may Allah reward you well too; for, to my knowledge, you are self-restrained and patient.”
