to extend his facial brightness, let him do so.”
It was reported by both al-Bukhari and Muslim. However, the words, “So whoever among you is able …,” were interpolated from the statement of Abu Hurayrah and are not part of the Prophet’s hadith, as a number of hadith masters have affirmed, including al-Mundhiri, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Asqalani, and others. I have explained this thoroughly in al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah, so there is no need to repeat it here. Even if this phrase were authentic, it would explicitly establish the recommendation of extending the facial brightness and brightness of the limbs, not of washing beyond the elbow onto the upper arm. Allah is the Grantor of success.
- “Whoever seeks protection from you in Allah’s name, grant him protection; and whoever asks you by the Face of Allah, give him.”
It was transmitted by Abu Dawud (2/622, al-Halabiyyah edition), Ahmad (no. 2248), and al-Khatib in his History (4/258), through several routes from Khalid ibn al-Harith, who said: Sa'id ibn Abi Arubah narrated to us from Qatadah, from Abu Nuhayk, from Ibn Abbas, in a report traced back to the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This chain is good, Allah willing. All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of al-Bukhari and Muslim, except Abu Nuhayk, whose name was Uthman ibn Nuhayk, as al-Hafiz stated definitively, following Ibn Abi Hatim in al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil (3/1/171). He mentioned that a number of trustworthy narrators reported from him, but did not mention any criticism or accreditation concerning him. Ibn Hibban included him in al-Thiqat. Ibn al-Qattan said: “He is unknown.” Al-Hafiz was inconsistent concerning him: in al-Asma', he said, “Acceptable,” whereas in al-Kuna, he said, “Trustworthy.” Apparently, he occupies an intermediate rank and his hadith is good, since he was a Successor and a number of narrators reported from him. Thus, he falls under the ruling of the obscure Successors whose hadith is used as evidence so long as no error on their part becomes apparent in it. This hadith is one of
