I say: Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from this al-Makhrami, whom I have not identified. I fear that he may be Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Makhrami, who narrated from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn al-Rimah, through his authentic chain of transmission from Ibn ‘Abbas, attributed to the Companion:
“When Adam’s son killed his brother, Adam, peace be upon him, said:
‘The lands and all who dwell in them have changed;
the face of the earth is dust-covered and ugly.’”
The hadith was narrated by al-Khatib in The History (5/128). Al-Dhahabi mentioned it in this al-Makhrami’s biographical entry and said: “He is the source of the defect, or else his shaykh is.”
The same is stated in al-Lisan, though it appears there as “al-Makhzumi,” which is a textual corruption.
Yet ‘Ubayd Allah was corroborated in his narration from Qatan. Malik said in al-Muwatta’ (3/83): Qatan ibn Wahb ibn ‘Uwaymir ibn al-Ajda‘ narrated that Yuhannis, the client of al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam, informed him that he was sitting with ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar during the civil strife when a female client of his came to greet him. She said, “I intend to leave, Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman! Times have become hard for us.” ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar said to her, “Stay where you are, foolish girl! For I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: ‘No one patiently bears …’” The hadith then follows.
Muslim (4/119), Ahmad (2/113, 119, and 133), Abu Ya‘la (10/166/5790), and al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (12/347/13307) narrated it through Malik.
There is also a corroborating report with this wording in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and others, recorded by Muslim and others,
