ibn ‘Abd al-Majid has been subject to slight criticism, though he has been corroborated, as you will see.

However, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar was corroborated in his chain of transmission. Ahmad (2/155) said: “Uthman ibn ‘Umar narrated to us: ‘Isa ibn Hafs ibn ‘Asim ibn ‘Umar narrated to us, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Whoever patiently bears …’” He then mentioned the hadith.

Muslim (4/119) likewise narrated it through Zuhayr ibn Harb: “Uthman ibn ‘Umar narrated to us,” with the same chain.

Ayyub also corroborated him from Nafi‘, with the wording:

“Whoever is able to die in Medina, let him die there, for I shall intercede for whoever dies there.”

It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3917), Ibn Majah (3112), Ibn Hibban (3733—al-Ihsan), Ahmad (2/74), and al-Baghawi in Explanation of the Sunnah (7/324/2020). Both he and al-Tirmidhi said: “A good hadith.” Al-Tirmidhi added: “Authentic, singular.”

‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar has another chain of transmission, which he narrates from Qatan ibn Wahb, from a female client of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar: she wished to depart during the civil strife, and times had become hard for her, so she sought the counsel of ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar. He asked, “Where to?” She replied, “Iraq.” He said, “Why not Syria, the place of gathering?! Be patient, silly girl!” … The hadith then follows as in his preceding narration from Nafi‘, but with the second wording.

Ibn ‘Asakir also narrated it through Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulaym al-Makhrami: “Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to us: Abu Damrah narrated to me from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar,” with the same chain.
