3068—“A community among the Children of Israel disappeared, and it is not known what became of it. Yet I think that they became mice. [Do you not see that] when camel milk is set before them, they do not drink it, whereas when sheep’s milk is set before them, they drink it?”
Al-Bukhari (3305), Muslim (8/226), Ibn Hibban (6225—al-Ihsan), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (4/277), Ahmad (2/234), Abu Ya‘la (10/6031), and al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (10/200/3271) transmitted it through Khalid, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. He then cited it.
Hisham corroborated him, narrating from Muhammad, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:
“The mouse is a creature transformed from another form, and the indication of this is that sheep’s milk is placed before it...”
The hadith also states:
“Ka‘b asked him, ‘Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?’ He replied, ‘Was the Torah revealed to me?!’”
Muslim and Ahmad (2/279, 411, and 507) transmitted it, as did Abu Ya‘la in abridged form (nos. 6060 and 6061). Ayyub also corroborated him, narrating it from Muhammad with the same wording.
Ahmad (2/289) and Abu Ya‘la likewise transmitted it.
Al-Ash‘ath also corroborated him, narrating from Muhammad an abbreviated report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording:
“A community from among the nations disappeared. Allah knows best whether it became mice or not. Do you not see that when camel milk is set before them, they do not consume it?!”
Ahmad (2/497) transmitted it.
