“A man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I wish to set out with such-and-such an army, while my wife wishes to perform Hajj.’ He replied, ‘Go with her.’” In another narration: “Go and perform Hajj with your wife.” Ibn Khuzaymah (2529) and Ibn Hibban (2720) declared it authentic. Al-Tahawi also narrated it in Sharh al-Maʻani, citing it as evidence that a woman should not perform Hajj except with a mahram. He said (1/358):
“Had this not been so, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would have said to him: ‘What need does she have of you when she is going out with the Muslims? As for you, proceed on your way.’ Thus, the Prophet’s not commanding him to do so, but instead commanding him to perform Hajj with her, proves that she should not undertake Hajj except with him.”
This was also the view of al-Hasan al-Basri and Tawus: a woman should not perform Hajj except with a mahram.
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated this from both of them in al-Musannaf (4/4–5). *
3066—(A man from the Ansar embraced Islam, then apostatized and returned to associationism. He then regretted it and sent word to his people: “Ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, whether there is repentance for him.” His people came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “So-and-so has regretted what he did, and he instructed us to ask you whether there is repentance for him.” Thereupon the following was revealed: “How will Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their faith ...” up to His words: “All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” So [his people] sent it to him, and he embraced Islam.)
Al-Nasa’i (2/170) and Ibn Jarir (3/241) narrated it—the wording being that of the former and the addition that of the latter—through the following chain: Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zuray informed us; he said: Yazid—that is, Ibn Zuray—narrated to us; he said: Dawud informed us, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, who said ... and he mentioned it.
Bishr ibn Muadh al-Uqadi corroborated Muhammad, saying: Yazid ibn Zuray narrated to us through the same chain.
