and this designation does not apply to anyone after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.*
- “No woman should perform Hajj except in the company of a mahram.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it in his Musnad: ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj; ʿAmr ibn Dīnār informed me that he heard Maʿbad, the freedman of Ibn ʿAbbās, narrate from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. A man then said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have enlisted for such-and-such a military expedition, while my wife has set out for Hajj.” He said:
“Go back and perform Hajj with her.”
This is how it appears in Naṣb al-Rāyah (2/10).
I say: Al-Ṭaḥāwī also narrated it in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/356), through another route from Abū ʿĀṣim, with the same chain, though he did not cite its wording.
Al-Dāraquṭnī recorded it in his Sunan (2/222/30) through Abū Ḥumayd, who said: “I heard Ḥajjāj say: Ibn Jurayj narrated from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār,” with the following wording:
A man came to Medina, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked, “Where are you staying?”
He replied, “With such-and-such a woman.” He asked, “Has she shut her door on you? No woman should perform Hajj except with a mahram.”
Al-Bazzār also narrated it (2/187/1488—Kashf al-Astār), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (11/249/11638 and 11639) and al-Awsaṭ (2/229/8542—according to my numbering), through several chains from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, in abridged form.
