it from him was Ibrahim ibn Saʿid al-Jawhari: “Abu Usamah narrated to us: Buraid ibn Abdullah narrated to me, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said…” and he cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, for both of them narrated many hadiths from Abu Usamah through this chain—were it not for the fact that it is interrupted between Muslim and Abu Usamah, since he did not name the one who narrated it to him. Yet he stated definitively that Ibrahim ibn Saʿid al-Jawhari narrated it from him, and a number of transmitters related it from him with a connected chain.
Ibn Hibban included it in his Sahih (8/223/6613 and 9/172/7171—al-Ihsan), as did Ibn ʿAdi in al-Kamil (2/496), al-Bayhaqi in Dalaʾil al-Nubuwwah (3/77), and Ibn ʿAsakir in Tarikh Dimashq (15/518/2), through various routes from al-Jawhari, with this chain.
Ibn ʿAdi mentioned it in the biography of Buraid ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Burdah al-Ashʿari and said:
“I examined Buraid ibn Abdullah’s hadiths and found no objectionable hadith among them. The most objectionable thing he narrated is this hadith, yet this is a good chain narrated by trustworthy transmitters. Some included it in their collections of authentic hadith, and I hope there is no weakness in this Buraid.”
I say: The two Shaykhs both narrated from him, as I mentioned shortly before. Al-Dhahabi said in al-Kashif: “Truthful.” Al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib: “Trustworthy; he makes few mistakes.”
Furthermore, Abu Usamah—whose name was Hammad ibn Usamah—was corroborated by Yahya ibn Buraid ibn Abi Burdah, from his father. Ibn ʿAdi reported it (7/2681) through al-Qawariri, from him.
