Ali ibn al-Mubarak also corroborated him from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, with the same report.
This hadith was previously traced under no. 260 in a somewhat different wording. The fuller clarification and additional sources included in tracing it here were necessitated by the preliminary discussion for tracing the hadith that follows.
There is also another hadith which Imam Ahmad and others related through this same chain of transmission; it was previously traced under no. 366.*
- “Indeed, the wicked are the people of Hellfire.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who are the wicked?” He replied, “Women.” A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, are they not our mothers, sisters, and wives?” He said, “Yes, but when they are given, they do not show gratitude; and when they are tried, they do not bear patiently.”
Ahmad reported it with the chain of transmission of the preceding hadith.
Al-Hakim (4/604) likewise reported it by way of Muslim ibn Ibrahim: Hisham narrated to us, with the same report. He said: “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
I say: This is one of their errors, for Abu Rashid al-Hubrani—the narrator from Abd al-Rahman ibn Shibl—is not among the narrators used by either of them, even though he is trustworthy. A similar remark appears in al-Majmaʿ (10/394).
Moreover, the chain contains Yahya ibn Abi Kathir’s use of an ambiguous “from” transmission formula. However, the tracing of the preceding hadith has shown that he heard it from Zayd ibn Salam, from Abu Salam, from Abu Rashid. The same occurs in this hadith: al-Hakim (2/190–191) reported it by way of Maʿmar, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Zayd ibn Salam, from his grandfather—who was Abu Salam, Mamtur—who said:
