Among those reports is the ḥadīth of ʿĀʾishah concerning Ibn Judʿān which al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned without citing a source. I shall now quote it in full together with its documentation. It reads:
“No, ʿĀʾishah. He never once said, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense.’”
249 — “No, ʿĀʾishah. He never once said, ‘My Lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense.’”
Muslim transmitted it (1/136), as did Abū ʿAwānah (1/100), Aḥmad in al-Musnad and his son ʿAbd Allāh in the Zawāʾid (6/93), Abū Bakr al-ʿAdl in Ithnā ʿAshara Majlisā (fol. 6/1), and al-Wāḥidī in al-Wasīṭ (3/167/1), all through a chain from Dāwūd, from al-Shaʿbī, from Masrūq (the last two omit Masrūq) from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, Ibn Judʿān used to maintain the ties of kinship in the pre-Islamic days and feed the poor. Will that benefit him?’ He replied with the statement cited above.”
There is another route from her. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād said: ʿAlqamah (al-Aʿmash) narrated to us from Abū Sufyān, from ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr, from her that she said:
“I said to the Prophet ﷺ, ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Judʿān, in the pre-Islamic period, would honor the guest, maintain family ties, free captives, and treat his neighbors well’—I praised him at length—‘so will any of that benefit him?’ He answered with the same statement.”
Abū ʿAwānah and Abū al-Qāsim Ismāʿīl al-Ḥalabī recorded this version in his Ḥadīth (fols. 114–115) through several chains from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid.
I have also located a third route: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ related to us—ʿUmārah ibn Abī Ḥafṣah narrated to us from ʿIkrimah, from her—with similar wording. Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid included it in his Ḥadīth (4/288/1–2) through two isnāds from Yazīd.
I say: This chain is authentic according to al-Bukhārī’s criteria, despite the two differing assessments reported from Abū Ḥātim.
