Abu Dharr said: “Indeed, I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh until his molars became visible.”
Waki‘ transmitted it in Asceticism (2/651/367): al-A‘mash narrated to us from al-Ma‘rur ibn Suwayd, from Abu Dharr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said ... and he mentioned it.
Through the route of Waki‘, it was also transmitted by Ahmad (5/157), Hannad in Asceticism (2/155/211), Abu ‘Awanah in his Sahih (1/170), and Muslim as well (1/122). However, Muslim did not cite its wording, but rather referred to the wording of ‘Abdullah ibn Numayr, which follows and contains an addition at its beginning.
Al-Husayn ibn Hurayth alone differed, saying: Waki‘ narrated to us, with the same chain, and adding the following addition:
“I certainly know the last man to enter Paradise and the last man to leave the Fire: a man will be brought ...” the hadith.
Al-Tirmidhi transmitted it in The Prophetic Character (2/20, with the commentary of Shaykh al-Qari), and al-Baghawi transmitted it through his route in Explanation of the Sunnah (15/192–193).
Al-Husayn ibn Hurayth is trustworthy and is among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, but I was not satisfied that he had differed from the report of the group from Waki‘. I say this only regarding his transmission of it from Waki‘; otherwise, others also narrated it from al-A‘mash.
First: ‘Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us from al-A‘mash, with the same chain, in the following wording:
“I certainly know the last of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise and the last of the people of the Fire to leave it: a man will be brought ...” the hadith.
It was transmitted by Muslim, Abu ‘Awanah, and al-Bayhaqi in The Sunan (10/190) and in The Names and Attributes (p. 54).
