The Dislike of Phlegm in the Mosque and Applying Perfume to Its Place
3050 — “How excellent this is!”
Al-Nasa’i (1/119) and Ibn Majah (762) narrated it through the route of A’idh ibn Habib, from Humayd, from Anas:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some phlegm on the qiblah wall of the mosque. He became angry until his face turned red. Then a woman from the Ansar came, scraped it away, and applied khaluq perfume in its place. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “How excellent this is!”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are all trustworthy. Although Humayd—namely, al-Tawil—was accused of concealment in transmission, they have stated that whatever he reports from Anas using an ambiguous “from” formula, he received from him through the trustworthy Thabit al-Bunani. *
3051 — “Hadramawt is better than Banu al-Harith.”
Ibn Abd al-Hakam narrated it in Futuh Misr (pp. 124–125), through the route of Ibn Lahi’ah, from Utbah ibn Abi Hakim, from Ibn Shihab, who reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it—then he cited it.
I say: This is a weak, mursal chain of transmission. However, it has also been narrated with a continuous chain in the hadith of Amr ibn Abasah, attributed to the Prophet, in a report in which he praised certain tribes and criticized others.
Ahmad narrated it (4/387): Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us; Safwan ibn Amr narrated to us; Shurayh ibn Ubayd told me, from Abd al-Rahman ibn A’idh al-Azdi, from Amr ibn Abasah al-Sulami. Al-Tabarani also narrated it in Musnad al-Shamiyyin (p. 193).
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy.
