Ibn Lahi‘ah only in corroboration. Yet he is trustworthy in his own right, and his hadith is authentic when it is narrated from him by the Abadilah (the scholars named Abd Allah). This report was narrated from him by one of them: Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak. Al-Haythami overlooked this and declared it defective, saying (2/60):
“It contains Ibn Lahi‘ah, concerning whom there is discussion.” *
His Humility and Generosity, Peace and Blessings Be upon Him
3043—“Yesterday, you stepped on my foot with your sandal and hurt me, so I gave you a light blow with the whip. Here are eighty sheep; take them as compensation for it.”
Al-Darimi (1/34–35) narrated it by way of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Abd Allah ibn Abi Bakr told me, from a man among the Arabs, who said:
“On the day of Hunayn, I pressed close to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I was wearing a thick sandal, and I stepped on the foot of the Messenger of Allah. He gave me a light blow with a whip he held in his hand and said:
‘In the name of Allah, you have hurt me.’
“He said: I spent the night reproaching myself, saying, ‘I hurt the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’ I spent such a night as Allah knows. Then, when morning came, a man was calling out, ‘Where is so-and-so?’ I said, ‘By Allah, I am the one who did that yesterday.’ So I went, apprehensive, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me…” Then he cited the hadith.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy transmitters cited by Muslim, except that Muslim only narrated from Ibn Ishaq in corroboration. However, Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard it, and thus we are safe from his concealment in transmission. He is therefore an authority, especially in Prophetic biography. *
