and al-Bayhaqi also narrated it from him in his two works, al-Shuʿab (2/533) and al-Dalāʾil (6/465); as did Aḥmad (3/38–39), through Bashīr ibn Abī ʿAmr al-Khawlānī, who said that al-Walīd ibn Qays told him that he heard Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī say: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say…” and he mentioned it.
Bashīr said: “I asked al-Walīd, ‘Who are these three?’ He replied: ‘The hypocrite disbelieves in it, the wicked sinner uses it to make a living, and the believer believes in it.’”
Al-Ḥākim said: “It is authentic; its narrators are reliable authorities from the Ḥijāz and Syria.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
Note: After searching for it in the places where it would be expected in his book, I did not find that al-Haythamī included this hadith in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid. Nor did Zaghlūl include it in the indexes of Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid. Likewise, al-Haythamī did not include it in his other work, Mawārid al-Ẓamʾān, so I have supplied this omission in that work; and there are dozens like it. All praise is due to Allah, by whose blessing righteous deeds are brought to completion. *
- “Surah al-Najm was being written down in his presence. When he reached the verse of prostration, he prostrated, and we prostrated with him; and the inkwell and the pen prostrated.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it in full with this wording in his Musnad (1/360/753—Kashf al-Astār): Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm narrated to us; Muslim al-Jarmī narrated to us; Makhlad ibn Ḥusayn narrated to us, from Hishām, from Muḥammad, from Abū Hurayrah: that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a surah written down in his presence… the hadith.
Al-Bazzār said: “We know of no one other than Abū Hurayrah who narrated it with this wording, and we know it only through this route. Makhlad alone narrated it from Hishām.”
I say: Both are trustworthy narrators cited by Muslim.
Muslim al-Jarmī is Ibn Abī Muslim al-Jarmī, and his father’s name was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; a blank entry
