Al-Haythamī said in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (2/149):
“Al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī, in al-Kabīr, narrated it, and its chain of transmission is good!”
I say: This attribution and grading as good apparently suggest two objectionable matters:
The first is that al-Bazzār’s and al-Ṭabarānī’s chains of transmission are one and the same, whereas this is contrary to the facts.
The other is that al-Ṭabarānī’s chain is the good one, whereas the correct position is precisely the reverse, as stated above.
This escaped Shaykh al-Aʿẓamī, who reproduced it from al-Haythamī in his annotations to Musnad al-Bazzār without any comment. Then Brother Ḥamdī al-Salafī came after him and took from it what relates to al-Ṭabarānī, saying in his annotation to it:
“He said in al-Majmaʿ (2/149): ‘Its chain of transmission is good!’”
He is not to be blamed for the way he understood al-Haythamī’s statement; but he ought to have examined the chain of transmission before him.
These errors, and the need to draw attention to them, were among the strongest reasons that prompted me to trace the sources of this hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, despite its authenticity and its widespread transmission from the other Companions—may Allah be pleased with them all.
3034. “A generation will arise after sixty years: ‘They will neglect prayer and follow their desires, and so will meet with ruin.’ Then there will arise a generation who recite the Quran, but it does not go beyond their collarbones. Three kinds of people recite the Quran: a believer, a hypocrite, and a wicked sinner.”
It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān (2/67/752—al-Iḥsān); and al-Ḥākim (2/374 and 4/547);
