Al-Ḥākim recorded it (4/209) and said, “Authentic according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabī rejected this, remarking, “Usayd ibn Zayd al-Ḥammāl is an abandoned narrator.”
246 – “Count for me everyone who has professed Islam.”
It was transmitted by Muslim (1/91), Abū ʿAwāna (1/102), Ibn Mājah (2/492), Aḥmad (5/384), and al-Maḥāmilī in al-Amālī (1/71/2) through numerous routes from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq, from Ḥudhayfah who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the above. He further added:
“We said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, do you fear for us when we are between six hundred and seven hundred in number?’ He replied, ‘You do not know; perhaps you will be put to trial.’ Ḥudhayfah continued, ‘We were indeed tried until one of us would not pray except in secret.’”
This wording belongs to Ibn Mājah. Sufyān corroborated it. Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī said in al-Fawāʾid (8/91/2): “Isḥāq—meaning al-Ḥarbī—told us, ‘Abū Ḥudhayfah narrated to us, saying, ‘Sufyān narrated to us from al-Aʿmash …,’” with the same content except that he said, “when we were one thousand five hundred.”
This is a mistake on the part of Abū Ḥudhayfah—whose name is Mūsā ibn Masʿūd al-Nahrī—he is truthful but has a poor memory, while the remainder of the narrators are reliable.
