This version of the hadith is corroborated by a report from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, eating a bone from a sheep; then he prayed without rinsing his mouth or touching water.”
Ibn Ḥibbān recorded it (2/236/115), as did Aḥmad (1/253 and 281), through two routes from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from him.
This Muḥammad—al-ʿĀmirī al-Qurashī—was trustworthy and among the narrators relied upon by the Two Shaykhs. The rest of the narrators are likewise trustworthy, so the chain is authentic, and praise be to Allah.
It is also found, in abbreviated form and without mention of rinsing the mouth, in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere through other routes from Ibn ʿAbbās. It has been cited in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd (182, 184, and 185).
I then found another route for the hadith, narrated by Abū Marwān al-ʿUthmānī, who said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from him, with the same wording.
Ibn Ḥibbān also recorded it (1139).
Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Abū Marwān al-ʿUthmānī, whose name was Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Khālid al-Umawī. He was truthful but made mistakes; thus, a narrator such as him may be used for corroboration. *
3029 — “O Abū Dharr! Clean earth will suffice you, even if you do not find water for twenty years—in another narration: ten years. But when you find it, let it touch your skin.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (2/198/1355, Ṭ edition): Aḥmad narrated to us: Muqaddam narrated to us: al-Qāsim narrated to us from Hishām ibn Ḥassān, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
