3027—(Ibn Masʿūd addressed us, saying:
“How can you command me to recite according to the recitation of Zayd ibn Thābit, when I learned directly from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than seventy suras, while Zayd was still among the boys, with two locks of hair?!”)
Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (2/277): Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us: Abū Shihāb narrated to us: al-Aʿmash narrated to us from Abū Wāʾil ... and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy and were relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Abū Shihāb was ʿAbd Rabbih ibn Nāfiʿ al-Kinānī al-Khayyāṭ, and Saʿīd ibn Sulaymān was the memorizer from Wāsiṭ.
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid also corroborated him: Sulaymān al-Aʿmash narrated to us through the same chain, but without its opening portion.
Aḥmad recorded it (1/411).
I say: Its narrators, too, are trustworthy and were relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. However, they criticized the reports of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid—who was Ibn Ziyād—from al-Aʿmash in particular. Yet his agreement with what others narrated from al-Aʿmash shows that he preserved it accurately.
Al-Aʿmash has another chain of transmission. ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān narrated from him, from Abū Isḥāq, from Hubayrah ibn Yarīm, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said:
“According to whose recitation do you command me to recite? I recited before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more than seventy ...” the hadith.
Al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Ḥibbān (7024—al-Iḥsān), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (9/71/8437) recorded it.
Its narrators are trustworthy and were relied upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, apart from Hubayrah ibn Yarīm, for he is acceptable, as stated in
