various routes from ‘Awf, from Zurārah ibn Awfā, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said … and he cited it. Al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī said:
“It is narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbās only through this chain of transmission; ‘Awf alone narrated it.”
I say: He is trustworthy and is among the narrators of the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Indeed, Ibn Kathīr said in al-Tafsīr (3/15):
“One of the trustworthy imams.”
The same is true of Zurārah ibn Awfā. Thus, the chain of transmission is authentic, as al-Suyūṭī stated in al-Durr al-Manthūr (4/155). Al-Ḥāfiẓ made no comment on it in al-Fatḥ (8/392), while elsewhere (7/199) he merely judged its chain of transmission to be good! *
3022—(“That was a man who intended something and attained it”—meaning Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī.)
Recorded by al-Bazzār (1/64/92—al-Kashf), Ibn ‘Adī in al-Kāmil (5/352), Tammām in al-Fawāʾid (fol. 238/1), and Ibn ‘Asākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (4/64), through the route of ‘Ubayd ibn Wāqid al-Qaysī: Abū Muḍar al-Nājī narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said:
Ḥātim was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said … and he cited it. Ibn ‘Adī and al-Dāraquṭnī said:
“No one narrates it other than ‘Ubayd ibn Wāqid.”
I say: Abū Ḥātim declared him weak, and al-Dhahabī and al-‘Asqalānī followed him in this.
Al-Dāraquṭnī said—as cited by Ibn ‘Asākir—:
