Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ...—and he cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhari and Muslim, and contains no hidden defect. It is astonishing that Ibn Hibban did not include it in his Sahih, and that al-Hakim did not cite it as a supplementary report meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (3/33):
“Ahmad narrated it with a good chain, as did Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat.”
Al-Haythami (4/132) followed him in attributing it to these three, but said:
“The narrators in Ahmad’s chain are narrators of the Sahih.”
In my view, his singling out Imam Ahmad for mention, to the exclusion of Abu Ya'la, is questionable, for Abu Ya'la’s chain is likewise so. He said: “Harun ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us; Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Sa'id narrated to us”—and so on. This too meets the criteria of the two Sahihs, for this Sa'id is Sa'id ibn Abi Ayyub, explicitly named in the preceding chain, and Harun ibn Ma'ruf is likewise among the narrators of the two Shaykhs. *
3018—“O Damrah! Do you think that your two garments will admit you into Paradise?” He replied, “If you ask Allah to forgive me, Messenger of Allah, I will not sit down until I take them off.” The Prophet said:
“O Allah, forgive Damrah ibn Tha'labah.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh (4/236–337), Ahmad (4/238–339), al-Bazzar (3/275/2740), and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (8/369/8158), through several routes from Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid, from Sulayman ibn Sulaym al-Kinani, from Yahya ibn Jabir, from Damrah ibn Tha'labah:
