“We were forbidden from following funeral processions.” In another version: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us from following funeral processions, but did not make it binding upon us.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, as well as others, and is referenced in Ahkam al-Jana'iz (p. 90, al-Maʿārif edition). This is therefore a strong corroborating report for the hadith, for her words, “but did not make it binding upon us,” appear to have the same meaning as his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “There is no reward for women in that.”
Moreover, I found another corroborating report for this portion of it, narrated by Suhayb ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Suhayb: ʿAbbād ibn Suhayb narrated to us from al-Ḥasan ibn Dhakwān, from Sulaymān ibn al-Rabīʿ, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Women have no reward for following funeral processions.”
Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (2/231/1/8575) and said: “Al-Ḥasan ibn Dhakwān alone narrated it.”
I say: As stated in al-Taqrīb, he was “truthful, but made mistakes and practised concealment in transmission.”
Al-Haythamī declared it defective, saying (3/28): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ, and its chain contains unknown narrators.”
I say: He seems to be referring to Suhayb ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Suhayb and the narrator who reports from him
