Hammad ibn Salamah also narrated it from Simak in a similar form, and the addition is his.
Al-Tirmidhi (43), al-Hakim (2/607), and Ahmad (5/90, 92, 95, 100, 103, and 104) transmitted it through various routes from him. Al-Hakim said:
“Its chain of transmission is authentic.”
Al-Dhahabi concurred with him. More properly, they should have said: “According to Muslim’s criteria.” *
3005—“The front of the Messenger of Allah’s head and beard, peace and blessings be upon him, had turned grey. When he oiled and combed it, this was not apparent; but when his hair was dishevelled, it became apparent. His hair and beard were thick. A man asked, ‘Was his face like a sword?’ He replied, ‘No; rather, it was round like the sun and the moon.’ He said: ‘I saw his seal at his shoulder, like a pigeon’s egg, resembling the colour of his body.’”
Muslim (2344) and Ahmad (5/104) transmitted it through various routes from Isra’il, from Simak, who heard Jabir ibn Samurah say ... and then cited it. In al-Dhakha’ir, al-Nabulsi attributed it to al-Nasa’i in “Adornment,” though this may be one of his errors, for it is not found there. It might possibly have appeared in al-Nasa’i’s al-Kubra, but al-Hafiz al-Mizzi, in Tuhfat al-Ashraf, attributed it only to Muslim.
I then found it there (8/50), in its first portion. *
3006—“The drink most beloved to him, peace and blessings be upon him, was sweet and cold.”
Ahmad (6/38, 40) transmitted it: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, from Aishah, who said: ... and then cited it.
