Al-Haythami said (8/44):
“Al-Tabarani transmitted it through several routes. Its narrators are those of the Sahih, apart from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Irq, who is trustworthy.”
Al-Mundhiri said (3/273):
“Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Kabir through several routes, one of which is sound.”
I say: I fear that this wording may be anomalous, since it differs from the first wording: this is from the Prophet’s statement, whereas that is from his action, and two trustworthy narrators concurred upon it. This should be examined.
Perhaps Abu Dawud’s addition to the first wording is of the same type:
“He would say: ‘Peace be upon you, peace be upon you.’ This was because, at that time, the houses had no curtains over them.”
I think that it is interpolated. And Allah knows best.
- 3004—“There were a few grey hairs in the parting of his head; when he oiled his head, they could not be seen, but when he did not oil it, they became visible.”
Al-Tayalisi transmitted it in his Musnad (2417 in its arranged edition): Shu‘bah narrated to us from Simak ibn Harb, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Samurah mention the Prophet’s grey hairs, peace and blessings be upon him, and then he cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to Muslim’s criteria. Muslim transmitted it in his Sahih (2344), as did al-Tirmidhi in al-Shama’il, no. 37 (Syrian edition); al-Nasa’i in “Adornment” (8/150); and Ibn Sa‘d in al-Tabaqat (11/433)—all of them from al-Tayalisi through this chain.
