Aḥmad recorded it (2/386), and Muslim recorded it through another route from ʿAṭāʾ, as mentioned shortly before.
The tenth: from al-Aʿraj, from him, without the additions. Aḥmad recorded it (2/243), and its chain of transmission is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Tirmidhī said after the hadith: “There are also reports on this subject from Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿĀʾishah, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā.” He said: “The hadith of Abū Hurayrah is good, authentic, and singular through this route.”
I say: As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Bukhārī recorded it (12/67 and 65), as did al-Nasāʾī (2/254), through al-Fuḍayl ibn Ghazwān, from ʿIkrimah, from him, without the aforementioned additions. However, he added at its end: “Nor does he kill while he is a believer.” In one of his two narrations, al-Bukhārī added: “ʿIkrimah said: I asked Ibn ʿAbbās, ‘How is faith stripped from him?’ He replied, ‘Like this,’ interlacing his fingers and then separating them; ‘but if he repents, it returns to him like this,’ and he interlaced his fingers.”
As for the hadith of ʿĀʾishah, Aḥmad (6/139) and Ibn Abī Shaybah (no. 39) recorded it with a chain whose narrators are trustworthy, except for Ibn Isḥāq’s unclarified ‘from’ transmission. As for the hadith of Ibn Abī Awfā, Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded it (40 and 41) with a good chain, as I explained in my comment on it; Aḥmad also recorded it (4/352–353).
It was also narrated on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar: Ibn Lahīʿah said, from Abū al-Zubayr, who said: I asked Jābir, “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah say”—and he mentioned only the clauses concerning adultery and theft—? Jābir replied, “I did not hear it.” Jābir said: “But Ibn ʿUmar informed me that he had heard it.”
