3000 — “The fornicator does not commit fornication while he is a believer; the one who drinks wine does not drink it while he is a believer; the thief does not steal while he is a believer; and no one seizes plunder, to which people raise their eyes, while he is a believer.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and others, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, through several routes from him:
The first: from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām, from him. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (5/90 and 12/48), Muslim (1/54), al-Nasāʾī (2/330), and Ibn Mājah (2/460–461), through several routes from al-Zuhrī, from him, with this wording. Al-Bukhārī’s chain in the first place is: Saʿīd ibn ʿUfair narrated to us; he said: al-Layth narrated to me; ʿUqayl narrated to us from Ibn Shihāb ... His chain in the other place is: Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated to me; al-Layth narrated to us with it. The others also recorded it through other routes from al-Layth, with it. Yūnus followed him in narrating it from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, with the same wording. Muslim recorded it, as did al-Bukhārī.
The second and third: Ibn Shihāb said: “And from Saʿīd and Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly, except for the mention of plunder.” Al-Bukhārī (5/91 and 10/28) and Muslim recorded it through Yūnus, from him, with this wording. Al-Awzāʿī followed him in narrating it from al-Zuhrī, except that he joined Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to the two of them. Muslim and al-Nasāʾī recorded it. Al-Dārimī (2/115) recorded it from Abū Salamah alone, and Ibn Abī Shaybah likewise narrated it in al-Īmān, no. 38—my edition.
The fourth: from Dhakwān, from Abū Hurayrah, with this wording, but without the mention of plunder; and he added:
