He said: “A man from the Anṣār narrated to me that whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed minor ablution or expectorated, the Muslims around him would hasten to his ablution water and his phlegm. They would drink it and wipe their skin with it.” When he saw them doing this, he asked them, “Why do you do this?” They replied, “We seek purification and blessing through it.” Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever among you wishes Allah and His Messenger to love him should speak truthfully, fulfil trusts, and not harm his neighbour.”
Imam al-Shāṭibī cited it in his valuable work al-Iʿtiṣām (2/139—al-Manār). ʿAbd al-Razzāq also related it in al-Muṣannaf (11/7/19748), through Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, with the same wording. I say: The narrators in this chain are trustworthy, apart from the Anṣārī man. If he was a Successor, then the report is mursal; nevertheless, it is acceptable as corroborating evidence. If he was a Companion, then it is an authentic report with a continuous chain to the Prophet, since ignorance of a Companion’s name causes no harm, as is established in hadith scholarship. It is most likely that he was Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, mentioned in the first route, for he was an Anṣārī and Imam al-Zuhrī narrated from him frequently. The preceding report, despite its weakness, also corroborates it. And Allah knows best.
Second: al-Ṭabarānī related in al-Awsaṭ (1/152/1): Muḥammad ibn Zurayq narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Hishām al-Sadūsī narrated to us: ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid al-Qaysī narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Abī ʿAṭāʾ narrated to us, from ʿUmayr ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith, from Abū Qirād al-Sulamī, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he called for water for purification and dipped his hand into it, then performed minor ablution. We then followed after it and drank it. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘What prompted you to do what you did?’ We replied, ‘Love for Allah and His Messenger.’ He said, ‘If you wish Allah and His Messenger to love you, then fulfil trusts when you are entrusted, speak truthfully when you speak, and be good neighbours to those who live beside you.’” And he said:
