“I say: The Mirdās from whom Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah narrated was in fact Mirdās ibn ʿUrwah, another Companion. He was mentioned by al-Bukhārī, Abū Ḥātim, Ibn Ḥibbān, Ibn Mandah, and more than one other scholar. Muslim, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Azdī, and a group of scholars explicitly stated that Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim alone narrated from Mirdās ibn Mālik al-Aslamī, and this is correct.”

He took him, kissed him, and seated him on his lap. Then a daughter of his came, so he took her and seated her beside him. The Prophet said—and he then quoted it.
Ibn ʿAdī said: “I know of no one who narrated it from Maʿmar with this chain of transmission other than ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿādh. Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd ibn Mihrān al-Īlī (1) narrated to us: ʿAbbās al-ʿAnbarī narrated to us: Yaʿqūb ibn Kāsib narrated to us this very hadith.”
He cited this in the biography of this ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿādh al-Ṣanʿānī, and reported that al-Bukhārī said:
