There is also a report on this subject from ʿUmar, but its text contains something objectionable, for it states: “My dear daughter, so-and-so has proposed marriage to you. If you dislike him, say, ‘No,’ for no one should be ashamed to say, ‘No.’ But if you approve, then your silence constitutes consent.” I therefore included it in my other book, al-Ḍaʿīfah (4166).
2974 — “We were commanded to do four things and forbidden from five: 1. When you go to bed, close your door; 2. tie the mouth of your waterskin; 3. cover your vessel; 4. extinguish your lamp. For Satan does not open a door, untie a waterskin’s cord, or uncover a covering; yet the troublesome little mouse may burn down the house upon its inhabitants. 1. Do not eat with your left hand; 2. do not drink with your left hand; 3. do not walk wearing only one sandal; 4. do not wrap yourself in a garment in a manner that leaves your hands enclosed; 5. and do not sit with your knees drawn up in a waist-wrapper in a way that exposes your private parts.”
Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it with this complete wording (1342—Mawārid): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Mūsā—ʿAbdān—reported to us: Muḥammad ibn Maʿmar narrated to us: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us from Ibn Jurayj, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, who said: He then cited it as a report attributed to the Prophet.
