I (al-Albānī) say: Abū al-Zubayr was a narrator who practised tadlīs, and in this chain he employs the ambiguous “ʿan …” formula. Even so, his reports used as corroborating evidence are acceptable—especially since, in the route transmitted by Ibn Lahīʿah, he explicitly says “he narrated to me.” Besides, Imām Muslim relied upon him!
The ḥadīth is further supported by another chain from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a woman and was attracted to her, so he went to Sawdah while she was preparing perfume and some women were with her. They withdrew, he satisfied his need with her, and then said: ‘If any man sees a woman who pleases him, let him go to his wife, for she has the same as that woman.’”
It was recorded by al-Dārimī (2/146) and by al-Sarī ibn Yaḥyā in “Ḥadīth al-Thawrī” (f. 205/1) through Abū Isḥāq from Ibn Masʿūd.
236 – “Purify your courtyards, for the Jews do not purify their courtyards.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ (11/2 of “al-Jamʿ bayna Zawāʾid al-Muʿjamayn”): “ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd told us; Zayd ibn Akhdham told us; Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī told us; Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd told us, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd, from his father,” as a marfūʿ report. He then remarked: “No one relates it from al-Zuhrī except Ibrāhīm, and no one relates it from him except al-Ṭayālisī; Zayd alone reports it.”
I say: Zayd is trustworthy and a ḥāfiẓ, and the rest of the narrators are reliable—the narrators of Muslim—apart from ʿAlī ibn Saʿīd, who is al-Rāzī.
Al-Dhahabī said: “A ḥāfiẓ, constantly travelling and roaming.” Al-Dāraqutnī said: “He is not at that level; he is singular in some narrations.” Ibn Yūnus said: “He had understanding and memorisation.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ (Ibn Ḥajar) added in al-Lisān: “Maslamah ibn Qāsim said: ‘He was trustworthy and knowledgeable in ḥadīth.’”
Al-Manāwī reported: “Al-Haythamī said, ‘Its narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ except for al-Ṭabarānī’s shaykh.’”
