Al-Daraqutni recorded it (3/72/272). Haywah is trustworthy, but the narrator from him, Wahb Allah Abu Zurʿah al-Hajari, has been criticized. ʿAta’ is Ibn Abi Rabah, and Qays ibn Saʿd narrated it from him, from Abu Hurayrah, as a report attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
“The earnings of a prostitute, the price of a dog or a cat, and the earnings of a cupper are unlawful gains.”
Ibn Hibban recorded it (1118) through Hammad ibn Salamah, from Qays ibn Salamah, with this chain. This is a sound chain of transmission: all its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators, apart, of course, from Ibn Hibban’s shaykh. Thus, it is strong corroboration for Ibn Lahiʿah’s hadith, showing that he had retained it accurately.
I then found a fourth route for it, narrated by Abu Uways: “Shurahbil related to me from Jabir,” as a report attributed to the Prophet, with the wording:
“He forbade the price of a dog and said: ‘It is a means of livelihood from the Age of Ignorance.’”
Ahmad recorded it. Al-Haythami said (4/91): “Its narrators are trustworthy.” I say: Shurahbil—who is Ibn Saʿd—had suffered deterioration in his memory.
It also has two corroborating reports, from the hadiths of Maymunah bint Saʿd and ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit. As for the hadith of Maymunah, Aminah bint ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrates from her that she said: “O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling concerning dogs.” He replied: “It is a means of livelihood from the Age of Ignorance, and Allah has made us free of need of it.” Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir (25/36/63) through Ishaq ibn Zurayq,
