Its chain is authentic, provided that Rabīʿah heard it from Abū Saʿīd; however, Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr stated explicitly in al-Tamhīd (3/214) that he did not hear from him. Zubayd likewise corroborated it: Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī told him that he came to his family and found with them a bowl of tharīd and meat from the sacrificial animals… the hadith, like the narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khabbāb. Al-Ṭaḥāwī transmitted it (2/307) through ʿAmr ibn Khālid, who said: Ibn Lahīʿah informed us, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Zubayd… Its narrators are trustworthy, but Ibn Lahīʿah had a poor memory. Yet he was corroborated, for Ibn Jurayj said: Sulaymān ibn Mūsā said: Zubayd informed me that Abū Saʿīd came to his family… the hadith. Aḥmad recorded it (4/15).
Ibn Jurayj practised tadlīs, and he narrated it using an unconnected formula, saying, “He said”! Yet, in another version recorded by Aḥmad, he said: Abū al-Zubayr informed me, from Jābir, with a report similar to this hadith of Zubayd from Abū Saʿīd; but he did not attribute all of it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Note: All these narrations, both authentic and weak, indicate that Abū Saʿīd, may Allah be pleased with him, did not hear the concession to store the meat from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Rather, he received it from his brother Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān, as in the hadith cited under this heading. It is therefore among the mursal reports of the Companions.
Accordingly, the report in the Musnad (3/63 and 66), narrated by Fulayḥ from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Thābit, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd—that he heard this from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him—is rejected. Its hidden defect is this Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, al-ʿAtwārī, who is known only through this narration. Ibn Ḥibbān listed him among the trustworthy narrators in al-Thiqāt (7/374 and 422), but a narrator such as him cannot be cited as evidence, especially when he contradicts others.
