This is so. Perhaps the inversion found in Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān’s version originated with Zaynab bint Kaʿb, for she is not well known, and no one besides Ibn Ḥibbān declared her reliable. There can therefore be no doubt that the version of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khabbāb is the one that should be relied upon, as al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī indicated above. Similar is al-Ḥāfiẓ’s statement in al-Fatḥ (10/25): “What is in the two Ṣaḥīḥs is more sound.” Yet his reference to “the two Ṣaḥīḥs” was perhaps a slip of the pen or a typographical error, since Muslim narrated it only through another route that does not contain the story of Qatādah. Al-Jurayrī narrated it from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī: that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “O people of Medina, do not eat sacrificial meat beyond three days.” They said to him that they had dependents and servants, so he replied: “Eat, feed others, and store it.” Muslim (6/81), Aḥmad (3/85), and Abū Yaʿlā (1196) recorded it; Ibn Ḥibbān (5898) transmitted it from Abū Yaʿlā. Ibn Sīrīn also narrated it from Abū Saʿīd in abridged form. Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (2/209). Rabīʿah ibn Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated it from him similarly to the version of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khabbāb, except that he did not name Qatādah ibn al-Nuʿmān. Mālik recorded it from him (2/36–37).
