as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated in al-Fatḥ (9/579). I had previously traced it in al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr (823), under the hadith of ʿĀʾishah. I then found two further routes for it.
The first is narrated by Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Madanī: Manṣūr ibn Abī al-Aswad narrated to us from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, with the same report. Al-Ḥākim recorded it (4/137) and authenticated it, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: Its chain of transmission is good. Its narrators are reliable and are narrators of Muslim, apart from this Manṣūr, who is truthful.
The other is narrated by Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, with the same report. Al-Bayhaqī recorded it (7/276), as well as in al-Shuʿab (5/70/5813 and 5814). I say: This is another authentic chain of transmission from al-Zuhrī.
2957 — “[Stay behind], my son! A change has occurred, so do not enter upon me without permission.” He said this to his servant Anas ibn Mālik.
Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (807), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (2/393), and Aḥmad (3/199 and 209). Through Aḥmad, al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī also recorded it in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (11/239), as did al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿab (6/164–165), through Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, from Salm al-ʿAlawī, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “I used to serve the Messenger of Allah, so I would enter upon him without permission. One day, I came and entered upon him, and he said...” He then mentioned the hadith, but without the additional wording.
However, Ḥammād ibn Zayd corroborated him: Salm al-ʿAlawī narrated to us ... with the wording:
