ʿUtbah ibn Ḥanẓalah said: I heard Ḥanẓalah ibn Ḥudhaym—my grandfather—relate that his grandfather, Ḥanīfah, said to Ḥudhaym:
“Gather my sons for me, for I wish to make a bequest.” So he gathered them, and he said: “The first instruction I make is that this orphan in my care is to receive one hundred camels—the kind we used to call, in the Age of Ignorance, the muṭayyabah (the choicest camels).”
Ḥudhaym said, “Father, I have heard your sons saying: ‘We acknowledge this only while our father is present; once he dies, we shall retract it!’” He said, “Then let the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, be the judge between me and you.” Ḥudhaym said, “We agree.”
Ḥudhaym and Ḥanīfah went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with Ḥanẓalah accompanying them as a boy, riding behind Ḥudhaym. When they came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, they greeted him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “What has brought you here, Abū Ḥudhaym?”
He replied, “This,” striking Ḥudhaym’s thigh with his hand. He said: “I feared that old age or death might come upon me suddenly, so I wished to make a bequest that this orphan in my care should receive one hundred camels—the kind we used to call, in the Age of Ignorance, the muṭayyabah (the choicest camels).”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, became angry, until we could see the anger on his face. He had been seated, then he knelt upon his knees and said: “(Then he mentioned the hadith.)”
They then bade him farewell. The orphan had a stick with him and was striking a camel with it, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “How large it is! This is an orphan’s club!”
Ḥanẓalah said: My father then came close to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “I have sons with beards, as well as those younger than them, and this one is the youngest of them. So supplicate to Allah for him.” He stroked his head and said, “May Allah bless you,” or, “May you be blessed.”
