Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

and he is weak on account of his poor retention.

The first part of it was narrated by ‘Abd al-Razzaq (10/406) from al-A‘mash, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Its narrators are trustworthy, but its chain has a double break. The statement, “The evil eye is real,” is reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah; its documentation has already preceded under (1248). It is also authentic from Ibn ‘Abbas, as has likewise preceded under (1250 and 1251).

I then came across a corroborating report for the first statement, but it is not one to be pleased with, for ‘Ufair ibn Ma‘dan narrates it from Sulaym ibn ‘Amir, from Abu Umamah, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording of the hadith under discussion. Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (8/192/7686). I say: Its narrators are trustworthy apart from ‘Ufair ibn Ma‘dan, who is abandoned. Several fabricated hadiths narrated by him have already been mentioned, demonstrating his condition; consult the indexes of the first four published volumes.

I then added: His statement, “There is no truth in the hām superstition,” has the same meaning as the Prophet’s statement, peace and blessings be upon him: “There is no hāmah superstition.” This has been established in a number of authentic hadiths in al-Bukhari, Muslim, and elsewhere, from Abu Hurayrah and others; their documentation has already preceded under the following numbers: (780, 782, 783, 785, and 789). In some of them, the wording is: “... nor is there any hām superstition.”

Since this is so, I decided to include the hadith in this series of authentic hadiths on the strength of all these corroborating reports, after having included it in Da‘if al-Jami‘ al-Saghir (6309—the first authorized edition). For that reason, I transferred it to Sahih al-Jami‘. I also included it in my new book, part of a project to make the sunnah accessible to the Ummah, Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad, under (355—Chapter on Good Omens—411). I was about to complete it, if Allah Most High wills. I then completed it,
