“It is an authentic hadith.” Al-Hafiz also deemed it strong in al-Fath (10 / 573). It is cited in al-Mishkat (4772 / second recension).
2947 — “Whoever erects a structure should support it on his neighbour’s wall.” In another wording: “If a person’s neighbour asks to support something on his wall, he should permit him.”
It was narrated by Ibn Majah (2337), Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in Tahdhib al-Athar (2 / 1 / 772–774 and 777), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (3 / 150), al-Bayhaqi (6 / 69), Ahmad (1 / 235, 255, 303, and 317), and al-Tabarani (11 / 11736), through several routes from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, in reports attributed to the Prophet, with closely similar wordings. The two wordings above are Ahmad’s; the second was also narrated by Ibn Jarir and al-Tabarani.
It has a corroborating narration from Abu Hurayrah, reported by Muslim and others. It is cited in al-Irwa’ (5 / 255), and its basic version is reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Ibn Majah’s wording is similar, as is a narration of Ahmad with the wording: “None of you should prevent his neighbour from fixing a piece of wood onto his wall.” Ahmad also worded it: “… [prevent] his brother from placing his support on his wall.” Both chains of transmission are authentic. Al-Tabarani also narrated it through this route (11502). Al-Haythami said (4 / 160): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir. Its chain includes Ibn Lahi‘ah, whose hadith is good, while the rest of its narrators are narrators of the Sahih collections.”
