Al-Bayhaqī has likewise cited the narration in his Sunan (2/90).
If someone were to say, “There is another report that proves the ḥadīth covers hurrying as well and that plainly contradicts the report of Ibn al-Zubayr—namely the marfūʿ ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah: ‘When one of you comes to the prayer, let him not bow before the row until he has taken his place in the row,’” we reply: that report is affected by a subtle ʿilla (hidden defect), and this is not the place to detail it; see Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfa, no. 981.
231 – “The enforcement of a single ḥadd (fixed legal penalty) on earth is better for the people of the earth than that they should receive rain for forty mornings.”
Ibn Mājah narrated it (2/111): ʿAmr ibn Rāfiʿ related to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak related to us, ʿĪsā ibn Yazīd—I think—from Jarīr ibn Yazīd, from Abū Zurʿa ibn ʿAmr ibn Jarīr, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said… and he mentioned it.
Al-Nasāʾī (2/257), Aḥmad (2/402), Ibn al-Jārūd in al-Muntaqā (801), and Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (287/1) also recorded it through various chains from Ibn al-Mubārak, but they all say “thirty” instead of “forty.” Imām Aḥmad reconciled the two readings out of uncertainty (2/362) in the route of Zakariyyā ibn ʿAdī, who reported from Ibn al-Mubārak with the wording: “thirty or forty mornings.”
