Habib ibn Abi Thabit added the explicit statement of hearing from Ibrahim, from Sa‘d ibn Malik, Khuzaymah ibn Thabit, and Usamah ibn Zayd, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he related it in similar wording. It was recorded by Muslim, al-Nasa’i (7523), and Ahmad (1/182).

As for the hadith of Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, it was mentioned shortly before in Habib’s narration through Ibrahim ibn Sa‘d from him. Ahmad also recorded it (1/173, 175, 180, and 186), as did al-Tabarani (1/109/330), through other routes from Sa‘d alone.

As for the hadith of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf, it is narrated from him by ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas and others: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab set out for al-Sham. When he reached Sargh, the commanders of the army divisions—Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah and his companions—met him and informed him that an epidemic had broken out in the land of al-Sham. He said, “Leave me.” Then he said, “Call for the elders of Quraysh who were among those who had emigrated at the Conquest.” Not two of them differed from one another. They said, “We think that you should return with the people and not lead them into this epidemic.”
‘Umar then announced to the people, “I shall set out on my mount in the morning, so be ready to do the same.” Abu ‘Ubaydah said, “Are you fleeing from Allah’s decree?!” ‘Umar replied, “If only someone other than you had said that, Abu ‘Ubaydah! Yes, we flee from Allah’s decree to Allah’s decree. Consider this: if you had camels and descended into a valley with two sides, one of them—”
