in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ (158), as mentioned above. Shaykh Shuʿayb, therefore, ought to have pointed this out, as scholarly integrity requires. Yet… it should not be said that perhaps he was unaware of this. We say: that is exceedingly unlikely in the case of someone like him, for my books are among the principal references in the library of the institution where he works, as one of the brothers who had been afflicted with working alongside him informed me!
I then saw that Ibn Kathīr had indicated that this passage is strengthened by its having come through several routes. See his exegesis of the verse, “Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet…” (2/252).
As for the third passage—the one concerning the morning expedition—it has many corroborating narrations from Anas, Sahl, and Abū Ayyūb in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere; they are documented in al-Targhīb (2/164–165). As for the fourth and final passage, it has a corroborating narration from Abū Hurayrah and another from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn; both have previously been documented under no. 902.
I then found a corroborating narration for the second passage through Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ḥulwānī: Muḥriz ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; Ḥassān ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Allah’s religion is the upright, tolerant faith.” It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ (1/45/2/783—according to my numbering), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (8/203), and al-Quḍāʿī in Musnad al-Shihāb (2/104/977), through two routes from al-Ḥulwānī with this chain. Abū Nuʿaym said: “It is singular; Ḥassān ibn Ibrāhīm alone narrated it, and we recorded it only through Muḥriz’s narration.”
