“Even if he commits adultery and steals.” This addition is authentic.
There are many well-known, authentic hadiths conveying this meaning in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere. I have only cited this one because it contains an addition not found in them, and to draw attention to al-Būṣīrī’s error in declaring it defective on account of a break in its chain of transmission. And Allah knows best.
2924 — “I was not sent with Judaism or Christianity; rather, I was sent with the hanifiyyah, the upright and tolerant faith. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, a morning or an evening journey in the path of Allah is better than this world and all that it contains; and one of you standing in the ranks is better than his prayer for sixty years.”
It was narrated by Aḥmad (5/266), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (7868), and Ibn ʿAsākir in The Forty Hadiths on Jihad (hadith 15), through the route of Maʿān ibn Rifāʿah: ʿAlī ibn Yazīd narrated to me, from al-Qāsim, from Abū Umāmah, who said: “We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on one of his military expeditions. A man passed by a cave containing some water, and he thought to himself that he would stay in that cave, sustained by whatever water it contained, gather the herbs around it, and withdraw from the world. Then he said, ‘If I were to go to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mention this to him, then, if he permits me, I shall do it; otherwise, I shall not.’ So he came to him and said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, I passed by a cave containing enough water and herbs to sustain me, and I thought to myself that I should remain there and withdraw from the world.’ The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then mentioned the foregoing statement.”
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission:
