through the route of Abu Muʿawiyah, from Abu Ishaq al-Shaybani, from Yazid ibn al-Asamm, from Ibn Abbas, who said: He then related it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to Muslim’s conditions. This is the second hadith indicating that the statement, “If the son of Adam had ...,” was Quran that used to be recited and was then withdrawn.
The third hadith: Zayd ibn Arqam, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
“We used to recite, during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: ‘If the son of Adam had two valleys of gold and silver, he would seek a third alongside them. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.’”
2910 — “We used to recite, during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: ‘If the son of Adam had two valleys of gold and silver, he would seek a third alongside them. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.’”
Recorded by Ahmad (4/368), whose wording is given here; al-Bazzar (4/246/3639); and al-Tabarani in The Great Dictionary (5/207/5032), through several routes from Yusuf ibn Suhayb, who said: Habib ibn Yasar narrated to me from Zayd ibn Arqam, with it. I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, and its narrators are trustworthy.
Al-Haythami said in al-Majmaʿ (The Compendium) (10/243): “Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar; their narrators are trustworthy.”
The fourth hadith: Abdullah ibn Buraydah narrated from his father, who said: “I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, reciting in the prayer: ‘If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would seek a second alongside it; and if he were given a second, he would seek a third alongside it. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam ...’”—the hadith.
2911 — “I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, reciting in the prayer: ‘If the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would seek a second alongside it; and if he were given a second, he would seek a third alongside it. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam ...’”—the hadith.
