Muʾammal said: I said to Sufyan, “Is this recitation found in the hadith?” He replied, “Yes.”
It was also recorded by Abu Dawud (3981), Ibn Jarir in his Tafsir (15/108/17687 and 17688), and al-Hakim (2/240–241), who said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him, and it is as they said. However, in his version, the verbs falyafraḥū (“let them rejoice”) and yajmaʿūn (“they amass”) occur with an initial yāʾ in both cases. The second verb likewise appears this way in the Musnad. I believe all of this to be an error by a copyist or printer; the correct reading in both is with an initial tāʾ. This is Ubayy’s recitation, while the first is the recitation of the majority of the reciters, as Ibn Jarir stated.
The aforementioned sentence is supported by a report from Anas, recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim, Ibn Hibban (9/139/7100), Ahmad (3/130, 185, 218, 233, 273, and 284), and others.
The second hadith: Ibn Abbas said:
“A man came to Umar to ask him for something. Umar began looking at his head and then at his feet, to see whether he showed any sign of destitution. Then Umar asked him, ‘How much wealth do you possess?’ He replied, ‘Forty camels.’ Ibn Abbas said: Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth: ‘If the son of Adam had two valleys of gold...’”—the hadith.
Umar then said, “What is this?” I replied, “This is how Ubayy taught me to recite it.” He said, “Then come with us to him.” So he went to Ubayy and asked, “What is this man saying?” Ubayy replied, “This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me to recite it.”
