I say: It is thus in the same sense as his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: “If any of you has two garments, let him pray in them; but if he has only one garment, let him wear it as a waist-wrapper, and not wrap himself in the manner of the Jews.” It was narrated by Abu Dawud and others with an authentic chain, and is cited in Sahih Abi Dawud (645).
2906 — “A hundred years will not pass over the people while there remains upon the earth an eye that blinks among those who are alive today.”
It was narrated by Ahmad (1/93), his son Abdullah (1/140), and, through him, al-Diya in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah (2/378/760); Abu Ya‘la (1/438/584); and al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Awsat (2/59/1/5988), through several routes from Mansur, from al-Minhal ibn ‘Amr, from Nu‘aym ibn Dajajah, who said: Abu Mas‘ud ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amr al-Ansari entered upon ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, and ‘Ali said to him: “Are you the one who says, ‘A hundred years will not pass over the people while there remains upon the earth an eye that blinks’?! Rather, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: …” — and he cited the hadith. “By Allah, the hope of this Ummah extends beyond a hundred years.”
Mutarrif ibn Tarif also corroborated him, from al-Minhal ibn ‘Amr, with the same report. It was narrated by al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (1/161), Abu Ya‘la as well (1/360/467), and, through him, al-Diya too (761), and al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (17/248/693).
