In summary, this chain of transmission is weak because Yahya ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Thaqafi is unknown. Nevertheless, both parts of his hadith are established as authentic through corroborating reports.
As for the hadith under discussion, it is supported by the hadith of ʿAʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her: “Whenever he heard the caller to prayer, he would say, ‘And I as well, and I as well.’” Abu Dawud and others recorded it. It has been referenced in Sahih Abi Dawud, no. 538. Ibn Hibban also narrated it, though it is among the material omitted from al-Haythami’s al-Mawarid.
The statement concerning renunciation of associationism is supported by the hadith of a man among the Prophet’s Companions: the Prophet ﷺ heard a man reciting, “Say, ‘O disbelievers,’” and said: “As for this man, he has renounced associationism.” He then heard another reciting, “Say, ‘He is Allah, One,’” and said: “As for this man, he has been forgiven.” Ahmad recorded it (4/65 and 5/376, 378) through two routes from Muhajir al-Saʾigh, from him. Its chain of transmission is therefore authentic.
It also has a corroborating report from Nawfal Abu Farwah, worded: “Recite Surah al-Kafirun, then go to sleep after ending with it, for it is a renunciation of associationism.” Ibn Hibban deemed it authentic (786, 787, 5500, 5520, and [..], p. 429, vol. 7), as did al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi. It is also found in al-Taʿliq al-Raghib (1/209). As for the addition that mentions asking about the best deeds, it has corroborating reports in
