Ahmad (2/459) also reported it through Shuʿbah, from Suhayl, with the same wording but without the question and answer. Al-Nasāʾī (2/57) reported it through another route from Abū Ṣāliḥ in abridged form, as did Ibn Abī Shaybah (5/333).
Among its routes is that of Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with wording similar to Malik’s hadith, but adding: “...until he returns with whatever booty [or reward] he returns, or Allah takes him in death and admits him to Paradise.” Ibn Ḥibbān (4603) and Ahmad (2/438) reported it, and its chain of transmission is good.
Another route is from al-Zuhrī, who said: Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib informed me that Abū Hurayrah said: ...and he then mentioned it in similar terms, including the addition in full. Al-Bukhārī (2787) and al-Nasāʾī (2/56) reported it.
Two notes:
First: Ibn Ḥibbān reported Malik’s hadith from his teacher ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd ibn Sinān, through his chain of transmission from Malik, with the same wording. He reported Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr’s hadith from his teacher Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAwn, through his chain from him. Either al-Haythamī, in Mawārid al-Ẓamʾān (no. 1584), or a copyist confused the matter, assigning the text of the latter teacher’s hadith to the former teacher and omitting the text of the latter because it appears within the text of the other—as is clear to you from our documentation here. Strangely, al-Mundhirī made the same error in al-Targhīb (2/179), attributing the text of the latter to that former teacher!
Second: al-Suyūṭī included the hadith in his two compilations, al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr and al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr
