It was narrated by al-Bukhari and others, and is documented in Sahih Abi Dawud (2044). In al-Jami al-Saghir, al-Suyuti attributed the hadith only to al-Tayalisi. In al-Jami al-Kabir, however, he added: “ʿAm., Samawayh, and Ibn Hibban.” Perhaps “ʿAm.” is a corruption of “Ḥm.,” for ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Walid was one of Ahmad’s shaykhs.
I am also surprised that al-Haythami overlooked this hadith and did not include it in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, even though it meets his criterion. Likewise, he did not include it in Mawarid al-Zamʾan. Perhaps he considered it to have the same meaning as the previously cited narration of al-Bukhari; on that basis, it would not meet his criterion. Allah knows best.
The hadith also has a third route from Jabir and another supporting report in the hadith of Ali—may Allah be pleased with them both. Ibn al-Jawzi transmitted them in al-Wahiyat (2/152–153) and explained their defects. What has preceded renders them unnecessary, though whoever wishes may consult that work.
It has a third supporting report containing a rejected addition, so it must be mentioned and its defect explained. Jaʿfar ibn Saʿd ibn Samurah narrated: Khubayb ibn Sulayman related to me from his father, Sulayman ibn Samurah, from Samurah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us from fasting without interruption during the month of fasting, and he disapproved of it, though not as a binding prohibition.”
Al-Bazzar transmitted it (1/482/1024), as did al-Tabarani in al-Kabir (7/300/7011 and 7012). Al-Haythami said (3/158): “Its chain of transmission is weak.”
