Ishaq was corroborated by al-Bazzar, who said in his Musnad (3/43/2196): Muhammad ibn Maʿmar narrated to us; al-Mughirah ibn Salamah Abu Hisham narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, through the same chain. However, he said: “He said: ‘Wherever Allah wills.’ He said: ‘Likewise, Hell will be wherever Allah wills.’”
Al-Bazzar was corroborated by al-Hakim (1/36), who said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbdullah al-Jawhari informed me—and this is his wording—Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Maʿmar ibn Ribʿi al-Qaysi informed us; Abu Hisham al-Mughirah ibn Salamah al-Makhzumi narrated to us, through the same chain. However, he said: “He said: ‘Thus does Allah do whatever He wills.’”
Al-Makhzumi was also corroborated, for al-Hakim likewise transmitted it through the route of Abu al-Nuʿman Muhammad ibn al-Fadl: ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, through the same chain. He said: “A hadith authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
I say: It only meets Muslim’s criteria, because al-Bukhari did not narrate from ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbdullah al-Asamm. He is trustworthy, as Ibn Maʿin and others stated. He was the brother of ʿUbaydullah ibn ʿAbdullah al-Asamm, and Ibn Hibban mentioned them both in al-Thiqat (7/36 and 142). The elder of the two was ʿAbdullah. Both narrated from their uncle, Yazid ibn al-Asamm, and ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated from each of them, as recorded in al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil and elsewhere. It was perhaps for this reason that the transmitters or compilers differed over the narrator of this hadith: was he ʿAbdullah, with the full form of the name, or ʿUbaydullah, the diminutive?
In Musnad Ishaq and al-Hakim’s Mustadrak, it appears with the full form; whereas in al-Ihsan and Musnad al-Bazzar it appears in the diminutive form. The same is found in Sahih Muslim (2/59), where he cited another hadith from him concerning what interrupts the prayer. He transmitted it from his shaykh Ishaq ibn Rahawayh through the chain mentioned above, but said: “ʿUbaydullah...” It is strange that al-Hafiz mentioned this hadith concerning interruption in the biography of ʿAbdullah, with the full form of the name, following in this his source, Tahdhib al-Mizzi, for it cited it in
